"Word Is Bond"

Updated: Mar 15, 2023

When we take making our word bond to ourselves, as serious as we take keeping our word to others, this increases our ability to hold ourselves one-hundred percent accountable for our lives and doing what it takes so that our lives can become what we desire for them to become. Quite often, whenever an individual’s life has not become what the individual has desired, the easiest thing to do is look for someone, circumstances, or external things to place the blame. There are circumstances that can impede our progress. There are people that can impede our progress. There are even “things”(ex. sex, drugs, inconsistency) that have the ability to impede our progress. However, if we make up our mind and say to ourselves that “I am going to do, be, or have what I told myself that I would do, be or have.”, then by the law of attraction and the law of cause and effect, there would be NOTHING or NO ONE that has the ability to STOP us from being, doing, or having. If it is true that thoughts become words, words become actions, actions become habits, habits becomes character, character shapes destiny, then by this process every time we follow through with keeping the word we have made with ourselves about being, doing, having, we increase our likelihood of creating good habits that will build and strengthen the character needed to manifest the destiny we desire. Oftentimes, our goal in making our word bond, or keeping our word to other individuals, is to maintain a certain reputation in their eyes. In “their” eyes? What would make someone else perception of us have greater value than that of our own? So often we are taught of the importance of relationships and how important it is to be honest and have integrity when it comes to building and keeping relationships. Just think about yourself. Would you want to be friends with someone that is not willing to be one hundred with you? In our ideal world, all of us would like to have blossoming friendships wherein our friends are 100% honest, supportive, and have integrity 100% of the time. Well, the most important relationship in life is not with the external person that we may consider to be our “best-friend”. The external person whom we consider to have those qualities that we are looking for in a friend. NO! The most important relationship is the one with ourselves. We have to be our first “best-friend”. And if we want our external friends to be 100% honest, supportive, and have integrity 100% of the time, this means that we must place those same expectations on ourselves, with ourselves. When we come to this realization, keeping our word to ourselves will have much more significance than keeping our word to an outside friend to keep our relationship. We want to keep and evolve the most important relationship with ourselves. After all, you are the most important individual to which your word should be made bond.

Take a moment to think about how everything that we set out to do in life will succeed or fail based upon our level of commitment. Our level of commitment is determined by the extent to which we keep our word, with ourselves. There is not a goal that we will set for ourselves that will not be determined by us making our word bond. This is one of the many reasons why most books that focus on achieving goals suggest that we write down the goals we want to accomplish. And after writing down those goals, consistently look at them every day. By writing down our intentions, we are reminding ourselves of the word that we are making. More often than not, people aren’t purposely breaking their word to themselves. If we do not take the time to write down our word, it can easily slip away from our mind. No matter how important we think it is. Only until it becomes a habit. For example, very few people “forget” to brush their teeth and wash their face in the morning. Why? Well, two reasons. One is because it’s become habitual and two, the mirror that we look into is a reminder that lets us know that those things need to be taken care of. At that point, the mirror becomes to our upkeep as the paper will be to our intentions. Also, without writing down our word that we intend to make bond, it can get caught in the mix of other thoughts that take place in our mind throughout the day. Scientist who have studied the human brain say that on average, the human thinks 60,000 thoughts per day. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad, who we mentioned earlier in this chapter, has taught that those 60,000 thoughts are moving on the average of 24 billion miles per second. WOW! 24 BILLION! The chances are very slim to have a thought at 2:18am that we want to manifest, go to sleep without writing it down, and remember the exact thought at 9:13am. Just like that, because we were not intentional with writing down the word we spoke to self that we wanted to make bond, we fail to do so.

In this life that we live, our word is very important. In some cases, our word is all that we have. There is a saying that “you only have one time to make a first impression”. Meaning that the experience someone has with us in our first interaction can determine how that person views us for the remainder of their lives. Likewise with words. We can have a good relationship with someone and be in a situation where we have given our word to them. We told the person that we would do something, be somewhere, etc. If we fail to make our word bond, without properly communicating with the person ahead of time, our word can lose value with them. Also, the person loses confidence in our ability to keep our word. Well, as we stated earlier, there is not one person in this life whose relationship with you is more important than the relationship you have with yourself. NOT ONE PERSON. Therefore, not keeping our word to ourselves has a much worse effect than not keeping our word to anyone else.

More to come on this subject Insha'Allah(God-willing)

As-Salaam Alaikum (Peace Be Unto You)
